The intensive course on surface tension and wetting is aimed for everyone who are interested physics of liquids and wetting. The objective of the course is to clearly establish how the apparent wetting quantities and phenomena arise from the fundamental physical properties of surfaces and liquids, and to demonstrate how these properties are realized in various practical systems of interest. Another key topic is the metrology of wetting: advantages and shortcomings of e.g. the optical contact angle measurements will be discussed.

The tentative topics of the lectures are:

  • Introduction to the fundamentals of wetting: surface tension of a liquid, contact angles, surface energies.
  • Dynamics of wetting: liquids on wetting and non-wetting surfaces.
  • Measurement techniques: pros and cons of the common methods; force tensiometry in surface wetting characterization.
  • Superhydrophobicity: Natural and synthetic super-repellent surfaces.
  • Technological implications of wetting: various applications & related concepts.

The course is free of charge, though registration is required. The teaching language is English. The course is worth 1 credit.
