Defence of dissertation in the field of computer science, Orestis Kostakis, M.Sc. (Tech.)
Title of the dissertation is: "Advances in Analysing Temporal Data"
Orestis Kostakis, M.Sc. (Tech.), will defend the dissertation "Advances in Analysing Temporal Data" on 26 May 2017 at 12 noon in Aalto University School of Science, lecture hall T2, Konemiehentie 2, Espoo.
Big data is a popular buzzword that describes the abundance of data produced in the modern technological world. With an ever-growing plethora of data sources, the rate of created data will only increase. A big part of the data is temporal data; measurements, or observations, annotated with timestamps. This thesis studies the analysis of a variety of temporal data types: temporal-interval sequences, temporal graphs (dynamic networks), and data streams.
This dissertation demonstrates solutions to fundamental problems belonging to two main categories: Search and Summarization. In turn, these solutions have enabled real-life applications such as detecting similar malicious software, identifying strategies of sports teams, detecting robot malfunctions, and providing assistive technologies for deaf people who use American Sign Language.
